Pavagada solar park busts notions of renewable energy as inherently good: Karnataka

Solar parks need 7,000–20,000 litres of water per megawatt (MW) per wash. A study titled Renewable Energy to Responsible Energy: A Call to Action, done by Forum for the Future with six other organisations, points to a large amount of water needed for periodic cleaning of solar panels. Many solar installations in India are located in arid and semi-arid areas bringing significant risk to the local ecosystem and communities.

Disappearing pollinators like bees and butterflies during installation is a concern. Pavagada, which has a 13,000-acre solar park, has also lost its bird and large mammal population.

There is concern around what happens when the park is decommissioned. A study says at the end-of-life stage, if not handled properly, toxic elements from disposed of PV panels can adversely affect ecological systems. The way forward will be in adopting more inclusive options like decentralised systems, community-owned models and cooperatives where people and communities own these systems.

Forest dept nod to clear 921 trees for New Delhi railway station revamp

The New Delhi railway station (NDLS) redevelopment project has received clearance from the state forest and wildlife department to remove 921 of the total 2,980 trees currently present at the project site, with forest officials saying that only 36 trees will be cut and the other 885 will be transplanted elsewhere.

The remaining 2,059 trees will be incorporated within the NDLS revamp design. The Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA), which is undertaking the project, will also have to carry out compensatory afforestation of 9,210 saplings (10 for each tree removed) across Delhi, said officials.
A senior forest official in the central division, under whose jurisdiction the project falls, said based on a proposal sent by RLDA in December, the department carried out a site inspection and identified the 36 trees to be cut.

“The call was based on the species types, the age of the trees, whether they were invasive or not and whether the trees will survive the transplantation. Most of the trees sought to be removed were found fit for transplantation and over 2,000 trees present at the project site will be untouched,” the official said.

Environment Is Not An Issue in the Punjab Assembly Polls

Assembly elections are being held in five states of the country in 2022, including Punjab. Voting for the Punjab Assembly elections is scheduled for February 20. The issue of a clean environment, the most basic requirement for living a healthy human life, is missing from the election campaign. So far no political party has touched it.

All the political parties are campaigning vigorously and these political parties have come up with various promises and claims to woo the voters. Punjab’s major natural resources (air, water, and land) are badly polluted. Our forefathers understood the importance of natural resources. Hence, they worshiped and respected natural resources.
If we take a look at the background a little bit, we will easily remember that our grandmothers used to throw money at any water source and bow down, but now they have wastewater of industrial units containing chemicals and sewage water is being dumped indiscriminately in water sources.

Punjab’s air is so polluted that according to IQAir February 8, 2020 index, not a single city here has air quality in the 1—50 category (Good) which is essential for human health. On this day, the air quality index of only three cities was below 100 (Moderate category) )and the air quality index of all other cities was above 100 which indicates that the air of these cities is very polluted.

UP Assembly Elections 2022: Political parties oblivious to climate change, pollution

Almost every urban voter in Uttar Pradesh feels air pollution is an important agenda and must be addressed by the political parties, a survey carried out ahead of the ongoing assembly elections found. Major political parties in the fray, however, have not considered the issue important enough to be listed in their election manifestoes.

Around 96% of more than 1,200 urban voters surveyed by Delhi-based climate communications outfit Climate Trends and market research agency YouGov felt that air pollution must be addressed by the political parties in the upcoming elections.
Uttar Pradesh has the maximum number of highly polluted cities in the country. The perception survey was conducted in the cities of Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Meerut, Varanasi and Gorakhpur. Three-fourths of the voters wanted air pollution to be a primary agenda in the manifesto, the survey found.

None of the major political parties contesting the assembly election this year has given importance to environment and climate change issues in its manifesto.
